Hans J. Kuehl of Riverhead died on January 25, 2012.  He was 75 years old.

Mr. Kuehl was born in Kiel, Germany on December 28, 1936 to Johannes and Henny (nee Kloth) Kuehl.

In 1960, he married the former Joan Tyrell and together they made their home in Flushing and later West Hempstead and Lindenhurst.  For many years, he worked as an electrician for the NYC Transit Authority.  Upon retirement, they moved to North Carolina and Florida.  Eventually they returned to Long Island and settled in Jamesport and more recently Riverhead.

Hans enjoyed model trains, car shows and traveling.  He was a member of Advent Lutheran Church and the Griswold Terry Glover Post #803 of the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Joan; four sons, John, Joseph and Paul all of Lindenhurst and James of Arizona; a sister, Ellen Schmahl of Germany and two grandchildren.

The family received friends on January 29th at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck where his fellow Legionnaires conducted services.  Funeral services were held on January 30 at DeFriest-Grattan by Reverend George Summers.  Interment, with US Army military honors, was in the Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
