A Suffolk County corrections officer shot a suspected burglar in his home early Saturday morning, according to Riverhead Town Police.

John Kwasna, 45, a 20-year veteran of the Suffolk County sheriff’s department, shot Thomas Anderson, 33, of Riverhead, with a handgun after Anderson confronted him in the hallway of his home on Old Farm Road at about 4:40 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Police said they arrested Anderson after he was spotted suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder, a short distance from Kwasna’s home.

Kwasna told police he shot Anderson after he ran towards him in the hallway of his home, police said.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Anderson to Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was later transferred to Stony Brook University Medical Center due to the nature of his injuries, police said.

Police did not say whether or not Anderson was armed when he entered the home.

Anderson was charged with burglary in the second degree, a class C felony.
