Wind chill values of 15 to 24 below zero will prevail this morning, as 15 to 25 mph winds, gusting to 35 mph, combine with an arctic cold air mass, according to the National Weather Service.

Wind chills remain “dangerous,” the agency said in a special weather statement this morning.

A wind chill advisory remains in effect until noon today for Long Island, New York City and northeastern New Jersey.

Five roads closed in Riverhead yesterday due to blowing snow and resulting icy road conditions have been reopened, Riverhead Highway Superintendent George Woodson said in a phone interview last night. Highway crews worked all night to keep other roads open as well. The northwest winds made it a real struggle, Woodson said.

Crews continue to work this morning to keep the roads open, Woodson said.

“If you venture out, use extra caution and stay alert for changing road conditions,” Woodson said. The roadway can be clear in one spot and then be suddenly snow-drifted, he said. “The most important thing is for people to slow down.”

The weather service cautioned against going outdoors, where prolonged exposure to the brutal winds and cold air will cause frostbite and hypothermia, it said.

“Outdoor exposure should be limited. If you are heading outdoors, dress in layers and keep your hands and head covered to protect against frostbite,” the weather service said.
