This week’s town board meeting had a packed agenda. In addition to adopting term limits for town board members and passing a local law to expand the supervisor’s term from two to four years — subject to a mandatory referendum in the November general election — the board adopted a new overlay zone that will allow high-density workforce rental apartments and took these actions:

•  authorized an $18,000 settlement with the New York State DEC on a notice of violation issued after the town’s sewage treatment plant exceeded permit discharge limits in December.  See story.

•  passed a resolution of support for acquisition by Suffolk County of the Main Road Jamesport property approved by the town board in 2012 for the development of 42,000 feet of retail, professional office and “bistro” uses.

•  authorized co-sponsorship of the “Alive on 25” street festival on Thursday nights, July 14, 28 and Aug. 11.

•  authorized the supervisor to execute a cable franchise agreement with CSC Aquisition-NY (Cablevision).

•  set May 3 public hearings on:

•  a proposal to create 10-year declining property and ad valorem tax exemptions on the value of improvements to properties within a historic district.

•  a proposal to replace a yield sign with a stop sign on Deep Hole Road at its intersection with Twomey Avenue in Calverton.

•  set a May 15 public hearing on extending the Riverhead Parking District to include 428 E. Main St., the home on the corner of East Main Street and Ostrander Avenue, known as the Preston House.

•  accepted the retirement of Riverhead Police Officer Charles Schneider, who was seriously injured in a head-on collision during a police chase on Sound Avenue in December 2011.

•  honored Riverhead Free Library, which is marking its 120th anniversary this year, by presenting library trustees with a proclamation recognizing the library.

•  thanked the Shoreham Garden Club for its Wading River Duck Pond Beautification project.
