Riverhead Landmarks Preservation Commission chairman Richard Wines urged the town board yesterday to adopt proposed town real property tax exemptions for exterior improvements to properties within historic districts.
The new code is intended to encourage owners of those properties to repair and restore them, Wines said. It would exempt for five years 100 percent of the property value increase attributable to those improvements. The exemption would decline in years six through nine.
To qualify for the exemption, the improvement must be made to a designated landmark or a property within a historic district, must meet guidelines for alteration and review standards for those structures and must be approved in advance by the landmarks commission.
The hearing record remains open through May 13 for written comment.
In other action at yesterday afternoon’s regular semi-monthly meeting, the board:
- set a June 7 public hearing (2:05 p.m.) on code changes to allow movie theaters as special permit use in the shopping center zoning use district;
