Surrounded by proud parents, coaches and administrators, five Riverhead High School scholar athletes who have received scholarships to play their sport in a Division I or Division II College in the fall, were honored at a ceremony on May 27th in the high school library.
Below is a brief summary of the accomplishments of these RHS athletes who have signed to play in college:
Blake Carrara, University of Maryland lacrosse
Blake Carrara is the son of Kathleen and Richard Carrara from Riverhead. Blake, who has a 103.65 weighted grade point average and is graduating fifth in his class, gave a verbal commitment to the University of Maryland as a freshman. In addition to lacrosse, Blake was also on the football team at RHS.
“Between athletics and academics, everything is perfect about the University of Maryland, a Division I College,” noted Blake. “I plan to major in mechanical engineering.”
Blake’s lacrosse coach, Vic Guadagnino, notes, “Blake is a dynamic, exciting athlete, who is fun to watch. He was an All-County lacrosse player twice, an Honorable Mention All American and a UA All American.”
Courtney Troyan, Stony Brook University lacrosse
Courtney Troyan is the daughter of Pete and Virginia Troyan from Riverhead. In addition to being a standout in lacrosse, Courtney played tennis, ran cross country, was on the field hockey and track teams, and played basketball.
Her lacrosse coach, Ashley King, notes, “Courtney is an outstanding athlete and leader, who was determined and worked hard at every practice and game. She was Academic All American, Team MVP, Leading Scorer and Draw Controls, All County (2015) and All Division (2015).”
Courtney was also a New York State Scholar Athlete with a 97.9820 GPA. She is receiving an athletic scholarship to Stony Brook University, a Division I College, and plans to major in Pre-Med at Stony Brook.
Austin Fitzpatrick, New York Institute of Technology lacrosse
Austin Fitzpatrick is the son of Patricia Fitzpatrick from Aquebogue. In addition to being a standout in lacrosse, Austin was also on the cross country and track teams. He was a four-year Varsity Lacrosse starter and team captain. In addition, Austin was a 2015 Honorable Mention All County and All Division player. Austin carries a 91.11 GPA and will receive a combination of academic and athletic scholarships to New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, which is a Division II College. He plans to major in Business at NYIT.
Katelyn Zaneski, Adelphi University field hockey
Katelyn Zaneski is the daughter of Laurie and Kevin Zaneski of Riverhead. In addition to being a standout on the field hockey team, Katelyn also played lacrosse. Katelyn’s field hockey coach, Cheryl Walsh, shares, “Katelyn has provided strong leadership, commitment and dedication to the RHS field hockey program. Her enthusiasm and strong desire to win will be missed. Katelyn was All County (2014), Captain (2015), All-Conference (2014), All Division (2013), Most Improved Player (2010), and a four-year varsity player.”
Katelyn has a 98.2907 weighted grade point average and plans to major in Exercise Science at Adelphi University, a Division II College. She shared, “I chose Adelphi because they have amazing academics and I really liked the campus and team.”
Samantha Dunn, LIU Post basketball
Samantha Dunn is the daughter of John and Joanne Dunn from Riverhead. Her basketball coach, David Spinella, wrote, “Samantha works harder than any player I’ve every had. She was a 1,000 point scorer, the League III MVP, a three time All County and Academic All County, and an All State Honorable Mention.”
Samantha, who was the 2016 Student Government President, has a 97.78 GPA, and will receive a combination of academic and athletic scholarships at Long Island University (Brookville), a Division II College. She plans to major in Political Science.
