(Updated: 4:20 p.m.) A pedestrian on the railroad tracks near the East Main Street crossing in downtown Riverhead was struck by a passenger train late last night.

The man, identified by Riverhead Police as John Nullmeyer, 49, of Riverhead, survived the accident but suffered a serious leg injuries and was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital. His right leg was partially severed and his left leg was also injured, MTA spokesperson Sal Arena said.

“The trespasser was lying down between the running rails. The engineer applied the emergency brake as soon as he realized there was a person on the tracks but the train could not be stopped in time,” Arena said.

Nullmeyer is listed in serious condition, according to a spokesperson

A spokesperson for Stony Brook University Hospital said this afternoon that Nullmeyer is listed in serious condition.

The westbound train left Greenport at 9:39 p.m. last night and was due in Riverhead at 11:02 en route to Ronkonkoma.

First responders initially called for a helicopter to transport the victim to Stony Brook, but took him instead by ambulance.
