John Anthony DiVello, lovingly referred to as “Johnny,” of Mattituck, passed away while enjoying one of his favorite East End pastimes, fishing, on August 4, 2016 at the age of 59 years old.
Johnny was born on October 9, 1956 in Queens to Frances C. DiVello and the late John M. DiVello.
His parents sought an idyllic environment in which to raise their family and grow their business, and in 1971 they made the move to Mattituck. Johnny’s inherent attributes quickly established him as one of the town’s most amiable, benevolent and hard-working residents. He graduated from Mattituck High School in 1975, where he earned the role of senior class president, as well as more informal peer-elected honors such as “Most Polite,” “Most Cheerful,” “Most Sincere,” “Most Friendly” and “Easiest to Get Along With.” Throughout his adult years, when he wasn’t working dawn to dusk for his family’s local sanitation company in Mattituck and on Shelter Island, he could be found doing his part as volunteer fireman for the Mattituck Fire District or readily helping out anyone (be it family, friend, stranger or animal) in need.
Johnny is survived by his mother, Frances, and is predeceased by his father, John. He is also survived by his children, Tina DiVello and Angela DiVello of New York City and John A. DiVello Jr. of Center Moriches, all of whom he shared with his former wife Catherine Senatore of Bradenton, Florida; Nicole DiVello, Taylor DiVello, Hunter DiVello and Leah DiVello of Mattituck, all of whom he shared with his former wife Terri Ann Raynor of Mattituck, his brother, Vito “Rocky” DiVello of Mattituck, his sister Diana DiVello-Haase of Orient and his brother Anthony DiVello of Mattituck.
The family received friends on August 8, 2016 at DeFriest Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A Funeral Mass was held in Johnny’s honor on August 9, 2016 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Mattituck before he was laid to rest at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemetery in Cutchogue.
The family appreciates all donations made in Johnny’s name to The National Parkinson’s Foundation, Mattituck Fire Department and/or Southold Town PBA, and gratefully thanks all who have shown their support in celebration of Johnny’s life and spirit.
