A gunman attempted to rob a Route 58 gas station late last night but ran off after a confrontation with an employee.
Riverhead Police said an unknown man entered the convenience store at the Mobil gas station on Route 58 just before 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, pointed a handgun at an employee and demanded cash. After a brief confrontation with the employee the suspect fled the store towards Pulaski Street.
The employee called Riverhead Town Police at about 10:44 p.m. to report the attempted holdup. Police searched the area with negative results.
