Riverhead schoolchildren return to their classrooms tomorrow for the start of the 2016-2017 academic year — and Riverhead Police, along with AAA Northeast, want to remind motorists to use extra caution on local roads.
“Drivers should be particularly cautious in school areas, keeping their speed at or below posted limits and being prepared to stop, on both sides of the street, for school buses with flashing red lights as required by New York State law,” police said in a press release.
With the beginning of the new school year at hand, AAA launched its annual “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” campaign. Thousands of posters, bumper stickers and other educational materials are distributed through the program. AAA New York’s “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” program began in 1945.
