2013 0902 blood drive

The Riverhead Community Blood Drive will take place  Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Riverhead Fire Department headquarters, located at 540 Roanoke Avenue in Riverhead.

Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood, according to the Red Cross website. Your blood donation could save someone’s life.

Giving blood is a safe and simple process that takes about 45 minutes from the time you walk in to the donation site until you walk out. The actual donation itself takes about 10 to 12 minutes of that time.

Regardless of your blood type, you can donate blood if you are in good health and between the ages of 17 and 7S. Sixteen-year-olds can donate with a parent’s written permission. Those over 75 need a doctor’s note to donate. You cannot have gotten a new tattoo in the last 12 months and you must weigh a minimum of 110 pounds.

Eat a low-fat diet and drink plenty of fluids before donating and please bring a photo ID with you.

Every donor will enjoy a free scoop of ice cream at Snowflake Ice Cream on Tuesday.

For questions and appointments please call Lauren Reichel at: 631-369-9136.
