A Mercedes sedan operated by a 92-year-old Bronx man slammed into the Riverhead Pizza Hut early this morning.

A 92-year-old man was hospitalized after driving his vehicle into the Riverhead Pizza Hut just before 2 a.m.

Riverhead Police said the driver, William Phillips of the Bronx, was taken by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of his injuries following the crash. The nature of his injuries and his condition following the accident was not immediately known.

The vehicle, a Mercedes four-door sedan, apparently careened into the west side of the building at a high rate of speed, penetrating the brick wall and glass windows on the west side of the building, police said.  The Mercedes was entirely inside the restaurant when it came to a stop.

The restaurant was closed when the incident took place. The building and the interior sustained significant damage. It was boarded up and remained closed today.

On May 15, 2015, a Nissan SUV crashed through the Pizza Hut, which is located on the route 58 traffic circle, during the afternoon, while the restaurant was open for business. The driver and two other people were injured in that crash. See prior story.
