Roy E. DeMeo of Cutchogue died Sept. 25, 2016 after a long illness. He was 94 years old.
He was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 21, 1921 to Joseph DeMeo and Frances Maginess DeMeo.
He graduated from high school and served in the United States Coast Guard as a chief petty officer from 1940 to 1945 during World War II. He married Antoinette Verrone on November 2, 1946. From 1945 to 1964 he worked for the motion picture protection business. He was the owner of Island Visuals in Malverne from 1964 to 1986.
He was a member of the Malverne Rotary Club and Flotilla 18-8 of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was honored as the Coast Guard Auxiliary Man of the year in both 1998 and 2001 and was named the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He was the Coast Guard Instructor of the Year in 1998 and 2003.
In his spare time, he enjoyed boating, woodworking, painting and birding and he loved classical music.
Roy was a kind, courtly gentleman who touched so many lives. He was so many things — veteran, boater, master teacher, mentor to many, volunteer, industrial designer who could fix almost anything, artist, lover of classical music — the list goes on forever. But most of all, he was a good friend and a man of impeccable integrity who set a high standard in everything he did, including caring and being there for his family and everyone else who was lucky enough to know him well — and there were many. He will be missed.
Predeceased by his father in 1970 and his mother in 1973, he is survived by his wife, Antoinette, his daughter Peri Karkheck (Russell), his son Roy E. DeMeo Jr. (Linda), three grandchildren Katie and Jesse Karkheck (Leslie) and Robert DeMeo and one great-grandchild Melanie Karkheck.
