The Riverhead Clergy Council held a silent candlelight vigil Monday night in preparation for Election Day.
“Regardless of political parties, religious affiliation or any of the things that separate us, we gather here to pray for the future of our nation,” the Rev. Dr. Sean B. Murray said to the group of around 20 people who stood in silence to watch the sun fall at Grangebel Park.
The vigil was held to “reflect and pray for our country” in an election that has been “unusually bitter and dis-illusionary,” the council said in a press release inviting people of “all faiths, races, genders, ages, religions and beliefs” to attend.
“Our hearts and mind turn to the awesome responsibility of electing a president to lead our country,” the release read. “We see people’s frustration and anger manifested in ways that tear down rather than build up. Divisiveness rules at a time when peace and hope should bind.”
“May God bless and guide Riverhead, our states, our nation and our world,” Murray said at the conclusion the ceremony.
