Four residents of a house on Rabbit Run were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for smoke inhalation after a smoky fire in their attached garage.

Riverhead Fire Department volunteers made a quick stop of the fire, which burned two shelf units, a wall and part of the ceiling, Riverhead Fire Chief Kevin Brooks said.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance transported four people to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation injuries, RVAC Chief Bill Wilkinson said.

“Riverhead volunteer firefighter Karol Danowski lives across the street from the and put a garden hose on the fire and knocked it down quite a bit and kept it from multiplying,” Brooks said, commending the volunteer. “He even had all his gear on,” the chief said.

About 50 Riverhead firefighters responded to the 9:10 a.m. alarm with two engines, a ladder truck and fire police vehicles, Brooks said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Riverhead Town fire marshal’s office.
