(Updated: 8 p.m.) Riverhead Police detectives are investigating two armed robberies that occurred early this New Year’s Day.
Two masked men wielding handguns held up the Mobil gas station on Middle Country Road in Calverton at about 5:30 this morning.
The men both wore ski masks, one wore glasses and both brandished handguns when they entered the gas station convenience store, an employee told police. They were described as of average height and thin build. The men removed money from the cash register and fled in a vehicle, police said.
In a separate incident, a 25-year-old man reported being beaten and robbed by five men early this morning.
Police were called to 769 Harrison Avenue at about 5 a.m., where the man told them he had been beaten with clubs or bats by five males while he was walking near 769 Harrison Avenue earlier this morning. He was hit in the face and the back of the head with a large piece of wood, police said. One of the men removed his wallet from he back pants pocket, police said. All five men fled on foot in an unknown direction.
The man had facial cuts and was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, police said.
