Ice and snow apparently contributed to an accident on Sound Avenue east of Herricks Lane this morning at about 4:45 a.m. A vehicle skidded on ice, left the roadway and crashed into a snow bank, according to radio reports. A second vehicle then crashed into the disabled vehicle, Riverhead Town Police said.
The driver of the first vehicle, complaining of face and neck pain, was taken by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Jamesport Fire Department responded to the scene with EMTs to treat the victim, fire police to control traffic and an engine. Firefighters checked the scene for leaking fluids.
Sound Avenue was closed to westbound traffic at Aldrich Lane by Southold Town Police, while emergency personnel were on scene and the accident was cleared.
Blowing snow and ice made travel on Sound Avenue treacherous overnight and early this morning. Riverhead Town Highway crews were dispatched before 5 a.m. to apply sand-salt and push back snow that had blown onto the road.
Motorists are urged to use extra caution traveling to work this morning, since temperatures remain frigid and patchy ice and black ice will remain a problem, Jamesport Fire Chief John Andrejack said.
