SC Historical Society offers African-American genealogy workshop Feb. 16

Exploring your family history can be a fun, albeit challenging activity. The Suffolk County Historical Society has a wealth of information in its archives available to anyone to use.

On Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. the society will offer an African-American genealogy workshop with Julius and Joysetta Pearce for beginning and advanced genealogists with an interest in researching African American family histories. This workshop will cover using sources of information, interpreting research data, incorporating new data and drawing conclusions, planning “next steps,” and organizing records. In addition, the illustrated presentation will feature live demonstrations of online research databases and tips for searching them. Members $15; Non-Members $20. Includes handouts and light refreshments. Registration required: 631-727-2881 x100.

The SCHS’s membership drive is celebrating 130 years of its own history. By joining the society, you will support local history preservation. Founded in 1886, SCHS is a non-profit organization that collects and preserves the rich history of Suffolk County. The society operates a history museum, offers an expansive library and archives and hosts a multitude of events, programs, and educational lectures and workshops. Its unique collection reflects more than three centuries of local history. Visit the website or call 631-727-2881 for more information.
