Riverhead Fire Department’s Ironmen Drill Team hosted its eighth annual spaghetti dinner yesterday evening at fire department headquarters. Diners feasted on a classic Italian spaghetti dinner with delicious homemade meat or marinara sauce, salad, bread and butter, dessert, coffee and juice for the children.
The annual spaghetti dinner is a fundraiser for the drill team, which was established Jan. 23, 1935 so that the department could have a single tournament team instead of each company in the department competing independently. It won the state championship just eight months later.
Over the years the team has taken numerous county, state and North Fork championships.
For the past 30 years, the Riverhead Ironmen have hosted a large motorized tournament each summer at the Route 58 training grounds, where more than a dozen drill teams from fire departments across the county compete. See photos from the 2016 tournament.
