(Updated- Feb. 13) Let’s hear a big cheer for the Riverhead High School varsity cheerleading team.

The Blue Waves made school history this weekend at the Universal National Cheerleading Association National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando, Florida.

For the first time ever, the Waves made it to the finals in this national competition. Riverhead placed 15th in the final round, which took place Sunday evening.

To get there, the team competed against 60 other teams from across the country in small varsity division I at the UCA nationals. Only 18 teams advanced to the final round. Riverhead had no deductions in the semifinal round, meaning they made no mistakes.

The varsity team is coached by head coach Stephanie Piraino and assistant coach Lauren Berry.

The UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship is held at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando.

The girls are expected to arrive at the high school Monday between 5 and 6 p.m. to a big welcome home by the school and community.
