One of Abraham Lincoln’s more famous quotes is “I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives.”  Two Riverhead Middle School students recently wrote contest essays that show Lincoln’s sentiment is alive and well in our students.

Eighth-grader Deonta Ramos took second place in New York State in the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen contest and first place in VFW District One, which includes Suffolk, Nassau, Queens and Brooklyn. Isabella Williams, also an eighth-grader, took third place in the VFW District One competition.

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society. Each year the theme of the composition changes, but it’s always based on patriotism. This year’s theme was “The America I Believe In.”

Deonta and Isabella were recognized for their accomplishments with proclamations from State Senator Ken LaValle, State Assemblyman Fred Thiele and State Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo. The students will receive a monetary prize as well.

The pair are social studies students of RMS teacher Dylan Hewkin.
