A three-car accident involving a Riverhead school bus on Route 25 in Aquebogue this morning sent one person to the hospital.

No one on the bus was injured. The bus was carrying about 15 elementary school children at the time of the crash, which occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m.

The bus was stopped to pick up children just east of West Lane, when an eastbound Jeep rear-ended a car that was stopped in the eastbound lane. The impact of the rear-end collision sent the car through the fence of the Aquebogue Cemetery and into the graveyard. The Jeep then crashed into the driver’s side of the bus.

“The bus was stopping to pick up my daughter,” said one woman at the scene. Her daughter had just boarded the school bus. “The bus was fully stopped. Its door was still open.

The accident blocked the westbound lane and snarled traffic on Main Road.

The female driver of the car rear-ended by the Jeep was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center with injuries police said were not life-threatening.

Police said the male driver of the Jeep was being ticketed for unlicensed operation.

No further information was immediately available
