McGann-Mercy defeated Port Jefferson 11-9 at McGann-Mercy High School yesterday.
The game began as a back and forth battle, with both teams matching run for run. The score remained tied into the third inning, when Mercy blew it open, picking up five runs, including three on a homer by Kate Wilkie. Port Jeff clawed back for two runs to make it 9-6, but the Monarchs answered with two runs of their own to make it 11-6. Port Jeff started a late rally in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs to make it 11-9, but could not get any closer.
McGann-Mercy’s next home game is Monday, April 24 against a tough Center Moriches team. Game time: 4:30 p.m.
