A Flanders man is planning to open an “escape the room” game house on West Main Street in downtown Riverhead.

Saulius Trucinskas got a warm reception from the Riverhead Town Board this morning for the idea. He wants to open the facility, dubbed Escape Quest, at 120 West Main Street, just west of Griffing Avenue. The 2,400-square-foot storefront space is currently vacant. It was part of a 5,000-square-foot furniture store at that location.

“It’s a fun thing,” Trucinskas said. Escape houses are popular all over the world, he said. Players work to solve clues to escape from rooms that can hold up to six people. There are two rooms per game. The first one to escape both rooms wins the game. There will be a one-hour limit on each game. Escape Quest will start with one game but will eventually have four games to choose from.

Trucinskas said he decided to pursue an “escape house” because, “there’s like nothing to do in Riverhead. You go to the bar or you go to the gym. That’s it.”

The cost of admission hasn’t been finalized, he said. It will probably be around $20 per person.

An indoor recreation facility in the DC-1 zoning use district requires a special permit from the town board.

The nearest “escape house” facility is in Ronkonkoma, Trucinskas said.
