Bike safety skills were put to the test Saturday morning at Stotzky Park, where around two dozen local kids competed for a chance to win new bicycles at the Riverhead Police Athletic League’s annual bike rodeo.
Before the competition began, Lieutenant Richard Boden gave the kids a quick lecture in bike safety, reminding the young cyclists to always wear their helmets, stay off of busy streets, look both ways before crossing and to ride with a friend when possible.
More than twenty competitors tested their cycling skills on seven different courses, competing in three age categories for top prizes of brand new bicycles.
Bikes were donated by the Riverhead Police Benevolence Association, the Riverhead Police Superior Officers Association, Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home and RiverheadLOCAL. Additional prizes awarded included Toys R Us, Dari Land, Snowflake, Sweet Tart, Roadhouse and All Star Bowling gift certificates.
