Riverhead Fire Department erected a memorial outside its Roanoke Avenue headquarters in honor of ex-commissioner Richard Ligon. A giant American flag was suspended from Redbird Hook and Ladder Company aerial trucks outside the firehouse. Ligon, an ex-captain of Redbird Hook and Ladder Company, joined Riverhead Fire Department in 1977.
Ligon died suddenly on May 8. He was 77 years old. See prior story.
Ligon was well-known and much-loved in the local community as well as throughout the county and state. The wake this afternoon drew hundreds of mourners. Visitation takes place at fire department headquarters, 540 Roanoke Avenue, tonight 6 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., with firematic services at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Riverhead, 1018 Northville Turnpike. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
