The Riverhead boys lacrosse season came to an end today with a 13-8 loss to Northport in the opening round of playoffs. The score, though, was not a good indication of how the Waves played the final game on their home turf this season.
Riverhead came out swinging, as they scored the game’s first goal, a beauty by Dalton Lucas. Riverhead took a 5-3 lead in the second quarter, but Northport didn’t stop attacking the cage. Jacob Coleman was great in net, stopping point-blank shots —low, fast missiles. He was in the zone, as always, but it takes more than one to win a playoff game. Northport tied it up, and quickly struck for the lead with about 40 seconds left in the half, but Riverhead mounted an attack, and scored with three seconds left to take both teams into halftime tied at 6.
The second half was all Northport, as they scored seven goals to Riverhead’s two, and took control of the ball with less than a minute to go, they took home the win, 13-8.
