A Griffing Avenue man was assaulted when he walked in on a burglary in progress in his apartment late last night, Riverhead Town Police said in a press release this morning.
Police said the man returned home from work at about 11:40 p.m. and after entering his apartment was hit in the head and knocked to the floor by a subject who then climbed out an open window.
The burglar fled northbound, leaving a backpack in the apartment that was found to contain items belonging to the victim, police said.
The burglar entered and left via a north side window that had been left open by the victim, according to the police report.
A Suffolk County Sheriff’s K9 unit searched the area without result, police said.
The victim sustained minor injuries that did not require medical treatment, police said.
The suspect was described by police as a tall male wearing dark-colored clothing and a mask.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have information is requested to contact the Riverhead Police Department at (631) 727-4500.
