It’s time for Brekky.

That’s Australian slang for breakfast and a word that tickles the fancy of the man who bought Hudson Market in Wading River last year.

After operating the cozy coffee shop on Sound Road for several months and getting a feel for the local community, Martin Accardi was ready to rebrand and revamp it.

And so Brekky was born.

Accardi can barely contain his excitement about his vision for reinventing the shop.

“I knew we needed more than coffee and muffins,” he said in an interview yesterday.

Brekky’s offerings include Accardi’s signature Brekky Bowls: a big açaí berry smoothie topped with granola and fresh fruit and other toppings.

“There’s a big demand for them,” he said. “They’re delicious and healthy.”

Accardi makes overnight oats. He soaks whole-grain oats in almond milk and Greek yogurt overnight. “Soaking overnight basically softens and expands the oats slowly,” he said. “In the winter we’ll have hot oatmeal.”

The shop also serves yogurt parfaits made with Greek yogurt topped with fresh fruit, nuts and grains of choice.

“We serve top-notch coffee. I buy it from the North Fork Roasting Company in Southold,” Accardi said. “We also serve cold brew and nitro coffee on tap,”

For the uninitiated, nitro coffee is cold brew coffee sweetened with natural cane sugar and infused with nitro gas in a keg. The gas results in “creaminess and a foamy head,” Accardi said. “It’s the smoothest, creamiest most delicious thing you’ll drink in the summer — well any time, really. It’s just delicious.”

Accardi closed the shop in February to redecorate. He opened up again last Friday.

“The reception has been great,” he said.

“Having a coffee shop has always been a dream of mine,” said the 46-year-old Lake Panamoka resident, who had worked in the construction trades his whole life.

While exploring the area after moving his family to Lake Panamoka last year, he happened upon the newly opened Hudson Market.

“I met Tony. He loves to talk and I would stop in and chat,” Accardi said of Hudson Market proprietor Anthony Coates, who had opened the shop last spring. “He mentioned he was moving and was looking for someone else to run the place. So that was it.”

Accardi bought the shop in September.

“I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the locals, the regulars,” he said. Downtown Wading River “is a very special place,” Accardi said. “I love it here. Being down by the pond in this hundred-year-old building feels really right.”

Brekky, located at 6 Sound Road, is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day but Wednesday. Hours will likely expand in summer, based on demand, Accardi said.
