Four local men were arrested at a sobriety checkpoint in Hampton Bays overnight, according to Southampton Town Police.
Police said Mani Hernandez, 34, of Flanders and Leonard T. Rempe, 51, of Riverhead were charged with driving while intoxicated. Elmer A. Castaneda, 21, of Flanders and Elvis A. Sequin-Ortiz, 24, of Riverhead were charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.
The checkpoint was established by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s East End DWI Task Force on Montauk Highway near Flanders Road from 9:10 to 11:15 p.m., according to a police report. During that time, 412 vehicles were screened, resulting in five DWI arrests and two arrests for criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said.
After 11:15 p.m., task force officers conducted saturation patrols throughout Southampton Town, stopping 41 vehicles for screening and making four additional arrests for DWI.
All of those arrested were processed at Southampton Town Police headquarters and held for morning arraignment, police said.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
