(Updated: 8:13 a.m.) A Baiting Hollow woman was seriously injured in a head-on crash on Sound Avenue Saturday night in which the driver of the other vehicle, who police said was driving drunk, ran away on foot.
A Riverhead Town Police K9 unit, with the assistance of state police, located and apprehended the driver who left the scene a short time later, according to the police report.
Police said Liliana Rios, 25, of Baiting Hollow, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center with serious injuries to her chest, police said. She is listed in fair condition Sunday morning, according to a hospital spokesperson.
One of two passengers in her vehicle, Nikolin Lejhia, 26, was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Lejhia's injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
Michael Murphy, 39, of Manorville, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.
The head-on collision on Sound and Twomey avenues occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Sound Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions while police cleared and investigated the accident scene.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks, police said.
