Driver of this Hyundai was airlifted after collision with a county bus, background, on River Road this afternoon.

A woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital this afternoon following a collision with a Suffolk County transit bus on River Road in Calverton.

The woman, driving a Hyundai Elantra, was an employee of Kent Animal Shelter leaving work for the day at about 4 p.m. She attempted to make a left-hand turn onto River Road from the shelter’s driveway and drove into the path of an eastbound Suffolk County bus, according to Riverhead Police. Her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, polic said.

The bus was carrying four passengers at the time of the crash. One person on the bus was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance for treatment of a minor injury, according to police; they did not say whether the injured occupant of the bus was its driver or a passenger.

Police said no summonses were immediately issued, but the crash is under investigation.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance transported the driver of the Hyundai, who was conscious after the crash, to Riley Avenue Elementary School for transport to Stony Brook by a Suffolk County Police helicopter.
