2014 0124 sweezy ave robbery attempt 1

An auto theft occurred on Sweezy Avenue shortly after 6:30 a.m. today.

Riverhead Police are searching for a 2001 Jeep Cherokee stolen from near 231 Sweezy Avenue this morning. The vehicle was reported stolen at 6:39 a.m.

The Jeep is gray and has a Riverhead PAL sticker on a driver’s side rear window. It bears yellow NY license plates GBK 1516, according to reports.

The theft took place in the vicinity of an armed holdup attempt on the same block at about the same time yesterday morning. See story.

It was also less than a quarter mile from another auto theft earlier this month on Osborn Avenue just north of the railroad tracks. A Ford pickup truck left idling in front of a deli was stolen at about 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 2. Police arrested Monwell Wright, 20, on Jan. 6 after he allegedly tried to sell the truck at a local salvage yard. Wright was charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree, a class D felony.

Last night at 10 p.m. a man was mugged at gunpoint on Griffing Avenue just north of the railroad tracks — less than a half-mile from yesterday’s first armed robbery attempt. See story.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crimes to call the police department at 631-727-4500 ext. 321.
