Firefighters from Riverhead, Flanders, Jamesport, Manorville and Eastport are fighting a mulch fire at a site on Horton Avenue in Riverhead this morning.
The pre-dawn alarm was called in just before 6 a.m. by a resident who saw a fire behind houses on the east side Osborn Avenue.
Firefighters used a line from a hydrant as well as water from several tanker trucks to douse the large mulch fire at a six-acre site owned by Horton Avenue Materials at 229 Horton Avenue.
A call for additional manpower went out at 7:29 a.m.
The Riverhead fire marshal is at the scene investigating the incident.
