The man convicted of strangling a woman to death in a wooded area behind the DMV in May 2012 was sentenced today in a Riverhead courtroom to 25 years to life in prison.
Suffolk County Criminal Court Judge John Toomey sentenced Guillermo Alfonso Alvarado-Ajcuc, to the maximum sentence allowed by law.
A jury convicted Alvarado-Ajcuc May 30 on two counts of second-degree murder. The 23-year old landscaper attempted to rape Mirian Yohana Garcia, 29, strangled her with his belt and left her nude body in a wooded area behind DMV Plaza on Route 58. The two met in the Sabor Latino restaurant and bar on May 6. Her body was discovered the next morning.
