A man using a torch to cut the tongue of his mobile home’s steel frame set fire to more than he intended to this morning.
Leaves around and under the trailer caught fire and “the flames just about the entire length of the trailer’s underside,” said Riverhead Fire Department First Assistant Chief Kevin Brooks.
“It just got away from him,” Brooks said.
Firefighters responded to the 8:40 a.m. alarm to find smoke and flames burning under the trailer on Bluebird Place in the R&R Mobile Home Park located on the south side of Route 58, east of Northville Turnpike. The homeowner told them the trailer was unoccupied, but Brooks said firefighters searched the dwelling to be sure. The fire did some damage to the underside of the mobile home, burning some plastic parts along with leaves and debris on the ground, Brooks said.
No one was injured in the incident.
About 30 volunteer firefighters responded with two engines. The Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded, as did Riverhead police and the Riverhead Town fire marshal.
