Riverhead firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire on Hallock Street early Tuesday morning.

An fire inside a garage at 169 Hallock Street prompted the alarm at about 5 a.m.

The fire appeared to have sparked in or under a refrigerator in the garage. It started to burn the wood frame wall and roof rafter of the garage, which is attached by a breezeway to the residence. 

No one was at home at the time of the incident, officials said.

Volunteer firefighters arrived and quickly snuffed out the fire. Chief Joe Raynor declared the fire under control at 5:14 a.m. More than 40 volunteers responded to the alarm with three engines and a ladder truck.

The Riverhead fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire
