Police, EMS and firefighters rescue man and dog from burning Riverhead home

Riverhead firefighters stopped a blaze that broke out in a Riverhead mobile home park late Sunday afternoon.

First responders rescued one occupant from the mobile home, a man who was asleep in a rear bedroom.

Police officers James Lydon and Anthony Montalbano and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps Chief Bill Wilkinson pulled the man to safety.

“Anthony banged on the windows of the mobile home from the outside and when we heard a response from one room, we pushed the air conditioner in,” Lydon said.

Firefighters Frank Darrow and Marissa Kess rescued a small dog from the smoke-filled dwelling. Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps EMTs administered oxygen.

The alarm came in at about 4:15 p.m. for a structure fire at the Oakland Ridge park on Osborn Avenue in Riverhead. Firefighters found a working fire at the home on Fourth Avenue inside the park and one occupant within the dwelling.

Riverhead Fire Department called in a rapid intervention team from Flanders Fire Department and asked Jamesport Fire Department to stand by at Riverhead’s headquarters.

There was heavy fire in the kitchen area that caused a lot of damage within the home, Riverhead Fire Chief Kevin Brooks said.



The fire was declared under control at 4:45 p.m. Firefighters remain on scene concluding firefighting operations. About 65 firefighters responded, Brooks said. The Riverhead fire marshal has been called to investigate the fire and determine its cause.
