The Riverhead Police Department kicked off its celebration of the 29th annual National Night Out yesterday afternoon during the town board’s monthly meeting by presenting awards to the winners of this year’s crime prevention poster contest.
Winners in three age groups received certificates from Lt. Rick Boden and tickets to Splish Splash (1st place), mini-golf at Out East Family Fun (2nd place) and the L.I. Aquarium (3rd place).
The Riverhead PD crime prevention unit has participated in National Night Out each year for 29 years, Boden said. There are about 3,000 communities across the U.S. that participate in the annual event, aimed at fighting crime in neighborhoods.
“We ask people to come out of their homes, turn on their lights and meet their neighbors,” Boden said. “It always seems to be perfect weather, too.”
