Lonnie Hughes' wife Mildred drives the fourth-grade teacher past Phillips Avenue Elementary School Thursday.

Phillips Avenue Elementary School teacher Lonnie Hughes returned home from the hospital Thursday.

Hughes, 57, suffered cardiac arrest during the PTO’s annual Crazy Sports Night event held last Friday at the high school. Quick-thinking and fast-acting EMTs on the scene, including fellow Riverhead teacher Greg Wallace, saved Hughes’ life by performing CPR and administering a defibrillator. See story.

On Thursday, the fourth-grade teacher and his wife took a detour on their way home from Stony Brook University Hospital to drive past the front of Phillips Avenue for an enthusiastic greeting by the whole Phillips family: teachers, students, staff and administrators assembled on the sidewalk to give Hughes a warm welcome home.

See video of the teacher’s welcome here.

Welcome home, Mr. Hughes!
