Riverhead’s varsity field hockey team lost a tough one in the season opener Monday in  Southampton, 2-1.

The Waves were leading 1-0 at the end of the first half on a goal scored by forward Jocelyn Zaneski with an assist by forward Melodee Riley and set-up by Amanda Graziano (defense).

Southampton came back to tie the score in the second half.  The game went into overtime, playing 7vs7 and Southampton scored the winning goal.

Riverhead goalie Allison Doscinski had 13 saves in the game.

“Everyone on the team played really well and we kept the intensity up until the end.  Every single one of us fought really hard and played our hearts out. Even though we didnt pull out the win, I am so confident and excited about this season and I know we’re going far this year,” Amanda Graziano wrote in an e-mail.

RiverheadLOCAL thanks Amanda Graziano for sending in the game report and her mom Diane for the photos.
