A car accident on the Main Road in Aquebogue today just before 1 p.m. left one person dead and six others injured, according to Riverhead Town Police.

The identity of the person who died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash has not been released by police. The victim, who suffered head trauma in the accident, was airlifted from the scene to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he or she succumbed.

Police said a 2007 Toyota Camry driven by Behoruz Benyaminpour, 54, of Great Neck was traveling eastbound on Route 25 when it crossed into the westbound lane. Benyaminpour's car caused a westbound 1998 Jeep Cherokee operated by Carlene Devito, 65, of Hampton Bays, to swerve off the roadway, police said. Benyaminpour's car then sideswiped a 2005 Honda Accord driven by Courtney J. Riso, 28, of Jamesport, and then collided head-on with a Hyundai Elantra operated by Joseph Fulcoly IV, 18, of Calverton, according to police.

Benyaminpour, along with his passenger, Haleh Kerendian, 41, also of Great Neck, and two juveniles in his vehicle, were transported by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center. The fifth passenger in his car was the person airlifted to Stony Brook with fatal injuries.

Fulcoly and Devito were also taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center. No further information about the condition of any of the crash victims is available at this time.

The cars driven by Benyaminpour and Devito were impounded for safety checks, police said. The cause of the accident is under investigation and police are urging anyone who witnessed the accident  to contact the them at 727-4500. No charges have been filed at this time.

The crash shut down the Main Road and tied up traffic in both directions for more than an hour. Ambulance units from Mattituck, Cutchogue and Westhampton responded to the scene to assist Riverhead.

Less than half an hour later, a pedestrian was hit by a car on Sound Shore Road in Northville. He was also airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital. The extent and nature of his injuries are not known at this time.

Joey Fulcoly is doing OK
written by Denise Civiletti, July 17, 2010
He posted to Facebook tonight that he's "pretty messed up but all good." Thank God for that. Our prayers are with all the others.

Any word on the condition of the man hit by a car on Sound Shore Road this afternoon?
