Some minor adjustments at halftime helped the Riverhead varsity boys lacrosse team to shut-out East Islip in the second half and secure a 7-2 win at home Saturday.
The first half consisted of a goal by Riverhead, an answer by East Islip, a goal by Riverhead and another answer by East Islip. The pattern seemed to be indicative of what would be a battle to the last second.
Entering halftime with a score of 2-2, Riverhead varsity boys lacrosse Head Coach Victor Guadagnino said, “It’s a tie on the scoreboard, but we felt like we dominated possession. We must have had a good 15 shots in the first half and with shots like that, you’re going to get more than two goals. It’s just a matter of adjusting our shooting.”
A few tweaks in their offensive strategy and 24 minutes later, the Waves walked off the field having shut East Islip out of the second half for a 7-2 win. Riverhead is now (4-1) overall.
Guadagnino said the East Islip goalie is considered the best in the tenth grade class in Suffolk County.
“You have to adjust your shooting to the goalie,” Guadagnino said. “And that’s what we did. Then you take a lead and in the fourth they have to do some more desperation things and you end up with a five goal win.”
Ryan Hubbard and Ryan Bitzer led the Waves in scoring with two goals each. Hubbard had two assists and Bitzer had one.
The boys lacrosse team travels to Brentwood (0-4) Tuesday for their next game at 4 p.m.
