Sound Avenue was shut down for 12 hours Thursday after a truck driven by Daniel Walsh  of Kew Gardens swerved to avoid an oncoming car that had crossed into his lane, according to Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller.

Walsh hit a utility pole and then a tree, bringing down power lines. The lines fell onto a 1997 Ford Explorer driven by Gerard Vanwart of Southold, Hegermiller said. Neither man suffered injuries requiring hospitalization, he said.

About 40 firefighters from the Jamesport Fire Department responded to the call, Jamesport Fire Chief Scott McKillop said.
