Another day, another chase.
Riverhead police apprehended another suspect after a foot chase downtown, this time on the east side of town.
Police said Aaron Hartman, 20, of Riverhead, led them on a chase in a vehicle when they tried to pull him over for a Vehicle and Traffic Law violation just before 1 p.m. The chase ended when the suspect’s car rear-ended a taxi cab on Ostrander Avenue, just north of East Main Street, police said.
The suspect then left the car, which police later learned had been reported stolen earlier in the day, and fled the scene on foot, police said. Police chased the suspect on foot through backyards, before collaring him on East Main Street, in front of Riverhead Town Hall near the Garfield Langhorn memorial statue, according to police.
After the suspect abandoned the vehicle, it rolled down Ostrander, across East Main Street and onto the sidewalk in front of Atlantis Marine World.
No one was injured in the incident.
On Monday, police chased and apprehended a suspect in a stabbing on West Main Street, pursuing him on foot through the Riverhead library and onto the railroad tracks, before catching up with him on March Avenue.
Police Chief David Hegermiller commended his officers. “They’re a good group of guys, no doubt about it,” he said.
This car, which police later learned had been reported stolen this morning, came to rest on the sidewalk outside the aquarium, after it crashed into a taxi cab on Ostrander Avenue during a police chase. The driver fled on foot and was apprehended in front of Town Hall. The tractor was just passing through.
