2014 0602 helicopter spraying

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works’ Division of Vector Control plans to treat parts of numerous salt marshes by helicopter tomorrow between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The county will be applying the larvicide Vectobac 12AS (Bti) and Altosid liquid concentrate (methoprene) to control mosquito larvae.

The low-altitude, large droplet liquid application will take place across the county tomorrow. To see the full list of marshes scheduled for larvicide application today, click here.

Marsh locations in the Town of Riverhead to be treated are:
Indian Island
Overlook Drive
Crescent Duck Farm- Aquebogue
Millar Farm
Pier Avenue

Marsh locations in the Town of Southold to be treated are:
New Suffolk
Great Hog Neck
Kerwin Blvd.
Pipes Neck Creek
Pipes Cove

Iron Point in Flanders is also scheduled to be sprayed.

“The products used by Vector Control are registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and are applied in accordance with the required State and Federal permits,” the county DPW said in a press release issued this afternoon.

“No precautions are recommended to prepare for this spraying, as the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift into inhabited areas. Human exposure from this operation is unlikely and the products involved have no significant human toxicity,” according to the press release.
