The L.I. Expressway between exits 71 and 73 will be closed to traffic in both directions tonight and tomorrow night from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., the N.Y. state DOT said in a press release today.
All traffic will be diverted to a detour route utilizing Edwards Avenue and Route 25.
The expressway crosses the railroad just west of River Road in Calverton.
“These night time LIE travel lane closures are needed to temporarily lift the LIE bridge over the Long Island Railroad to perform structural improvements as part of a $3.4 million repair project to preserve the integrity of the bridge and maintain the safety of motorists and LIRR riders,” according to the DOT press release.
As with most road work, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather, the DOT said.
Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these nightly travel lane closures. Motorists are being warned in advance of these closures via electronic message signs. However, drivers are urged to use alternate routes or they will experience delays, especially during the initial closure hours of the LIE.
“The New York State Department of Transportation appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists during this important LIE bridge repair operation,” the press release said.
