Two traffic signals are coming to Flanders Road, N.Y. State Assemblyman Fred Thiele announced in a press release yesterday.
The state Department of Transportation plans to install signals at the intersections of on Flanders Road (State Route 24) and Long Neck Boulevard and on Flanders Road and Oak Avenue, Thiele said.
Thiele said he’s been working with state DOT officials, Southampton Town officials and members of the Flanders, Riverside and Northampton Community Association to address ongoing road and traffic safety concerns on Flanders Road.
A traffic study prepared by the DOT for Flanders Road identified the need for traffic signals at both intersections.
FRNCA president Vince Taldone said he was “thrilled” that the signals would be installed.
The assemblyman got the DOT to do some traffic counts to see if these intersections needed signalization, Taldone said.
“These two intersections are the worst and so I am very pleased that the problem will be solved at those locations. Also, other streets feed into these major side roads and so folks unwilling to challenge the traffic on SR 24, can scoot over to these intersections and be safely guided onto the road,” Taldone said.
“The signals are particularly important for pedestrians, who take their lives into their hands when trying to cross Flanders Road,” he said.
“I am told that the timing of the lights really won’t change the flow of SR 24 or in any way significantly delay through drivers who are driving at the legal speed limits,” Taldone said.
“I am grateful to Fred for his intervention, this is only one of many, to make SR 24 safer for the residents of Flanders and for our visitors.”
