And the list of accolades continues to grow for Riverhead’s Carolyn Carrera in this her final varsity season.
After being named a News 12 “Scholar-Athlete of the Week” last month, receiving a $1,000 scholarship, Carrera, a three-sport phenom who will attend Hofstra University to play both soccer and lacrosse, was named New York’s female winner of the 2013 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.
Every year, the award is given to one male and one female student in each state nationwide. Winners are chosen based on excellence in athletics, academics and community leadership.
Carrera, a lacrosse academic all-american, is also the senior class president. She has a 98.75 unweighted average, ranked third her class and scored a 2040 on the SATs.
Carrera was chosen from a pool of 48,000 applicants. Last month, Carrera was named a finalist as the field was narrowed down to 10 male and 10 female athletes. She now qualifies for the national competition which takes place on Dec. 13.
Twelve national finalists will be selected and featured on ESPN to receive gold medals and $2,000 for their high school.
And of those 12, one male and one female will receive a crystal Wendy’s High School Heisman trophy and a $500 gift certificate to Wendy’s. The high school of each national winner will receive a donation of $10,000.
