High wind warning

Strong winds and potentially heavy rains will impact the region later today and tonight, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

The coastal storm that barreled through the region late last night and early this morning brought strong winds and hazardous gusts that downed trees, branches and wires, causing scattered power outages across the island and flooding on local roads.

Severe weather forecasted from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning prompted the declaration of a state of emergency in Suffolk County by County Executive Ed Romaine Monday night.

A major coastal storm is forecast to bear down on the New York metro region late tonight into Monday, bringing potentially heavy rainfall, high winds and widespread minor to moderate coastal flooding across the area, according to the National Weather Service.

More than 3 inches of rain and possibly a thunderstorm are in the forecast today, with winds of 25-35 mph, gusting to 55-60 mph, according to the National Weather Service forecast. A high wind warning is in effect.

Wind gusts of up to 65 mph will continue to affect Suffolk County this morning through about 8 a.m., the National Weather Service said in a special weather statement. Winds are brining down poles, wires, limbs and trees in areas across town. A high wind warning remains in effect through 10 a.m.
